One Summer Night
September 7, 2025
My submission to the OST Composing Jam 8.
I was inspired by both the text and picture theme this year! The warm glow of the lights against the sunset over the ocean brought up a strong vision in my head. I wanted digital, bitcrushed waves and seagulls against lush synths.
As I started composing, I imagined a game where you'd be kayaking around a bay from sunset into night, avoiding rocks and rapids and taking in the beauty of the surrounding area.
To keep it cohesive, I used the same palette of instruments and effects across the compositions, with some additions/subtractions depending on the needs of each piece.

Originally "Aubade for solo piano" by doctorpotatomd, remixed as part of the 2025 8Bit Music Theory Discord's Summer Secret Santa exchange.
Fell in love with this piece when Doctor Potato, MD first submitted it for tritone week, and when reviewing he sent over a bunch of pieces for Summer Santa, it caught my ear again. Since it was for solo piano, I also thought it could be a fun piece to expand and build on. I could immediately start to hear it in the style of a Porter Robinson song with some crunchy distorted arpeggios and big chords so I explored that direction, bringing in some lush electric piano and pads to pair with synth melodies and a drum sample kit. Don't think I quite reached Porter Robinson's level (😂) but it was a lot of fun to work on after not doing any music for a few months.

I loved this original! It was a great prompt:
Create a piece that includes a level section, boss section, and an optional post-boss section and your piece must include at least one modulation
And I thought Lampie did a really great job with it, going beyond the prompt into a five-part concept piece. The whole thing was really groovy and easy to listen to, and felt like an SNES soundtrack. I was especially attracted to the bass grooves, so I started my arrangement with those as the base (hehe) and then built up, trying to change the overall genre and mood. Once I had the arrangement sketched out, I started to narrow down more on the overall instrumentation and details like transitions, texture, etc. I found some cool Speak & Spell samples that I thought complemented the piece well, so I crafted those into an underlying story of playing a game that sounded like it was inspired by the 80s. Had a lot of fun with it!
